Blokus is an abstract strategy game for 2 to 4 players. Everyone tries to fit as many of their 21 coloured pieces onto a shared board, under one rule: your own pieces may touch each other only at the corners. It suits families with children aged 7 and up, grandparents and puzzle lovers, because it takes a minute to learn and needs no reading. Mattel's India-made copy is priced at ₹999 at Hamleys and Toycra, but both were out of stock on 5 October 2026, and Amazon.in had only imported copies at several times the store price.
Is Blokus right for your table?
A good pick for
- Mixed ages and mixed languages, since the only thing to understand is one placement rule
- Families with exactly four players, which is the number the board is built for
- Children who like puzzles and tangram-style shapes, at 7 and up
- A calm game after a meal: there is no luck, so the outcome comes down to the choices you make
Skip it if
- You want a social game with talking, bluffing or laughter; Blokus is quiet
- Players who dislike being blocked; getting boxed in is the heart of the game
- You need it this week at Indian prices: the ₹999 Mattel copy was out of stock everywhere we checked on 5 October 2026
How Blokus plays
The board is a 20x20 grid. Each player takes the 21 pieces of one colour (blue, yellow, red or green). The pieces are every possible shape made of one to five squares: one single square, one two-square piece, two three-square pieces, five four-square pieces and twelve five-square pieces.
Your first piece must cover the corner square on your side of the board. After that, every new piece you place must touch at least one of your own pieces at a corner, and it may never touch your own colour along a flat side. Your pieces can touch other players' pieces any way you like.
That single rule makes the game. You spread diagonally across the board looking for open space, while your opponents do the same and try to close the gaps you need. The big five-square pieces get harder to fit as the board fills up, so it usually pays to place them while there is still room.
The game ends when nobody can place another piece. In Mattel's basic scoring, the player with the fewest squares left over wins. In the advanced scoring, each leftover square costs a point, placing all 21 pieces earns 15 bonus points, and you get 5 more if the last piece you placed was the single square.
With two players, each person controls two colours. With three, the fourth colour is shared: players take turns placing its pieces, and it is not scored. Four players, one colour each, is how the board is designed to be played.
Takes about 2 minutes to teach. Blokus is all coloured shapes on a grid, with no words, numbers or cards. Once one person has read the short rules, anyone can play, whatever language they speak, so it works well when grandparents and grandchildren sit down together.
Buying Blokus in India
Wait for the India-made Mattel copy if you can. Hamleys lists its country of origin as India and Mattel Toys (India) Pvt Ltd as the manufacturer, and Hamleys and Toycra both price it at ₹999. On 5 October 2026 both showed it as unavailable. The only full-size Blokus listings on Amazon.in were imports at several times the Indian price. Blokus Fast Fun at ₹399 is the only version in stock locally, but it is the smaller set.
The classic game is Mattel product code BJV44, with 84 pieces and a full-size board. Hamleys and Toycra both list it at ₹999. Hamleys also stocks Blokus Fast Fun (Mattel FMW25), a smaller and cheaper version in a compact box, at ₹399, in stock, made in China and imported by Mattel Toys India. It is a genuine Mattel product but not the classic set. On Amazon.in, the other Blokus versions are imports: an R1983 listing at ₹6,467 that may be the oversized Blokus XL, and World's Smallest Blokus at ₹2,918. Flipkart has listings for Blokus Duo (a dedicated two-player version), Blokus Trigon (triangular pieces) and Blokus To Go, which we did not price.
How to make sure you get a genuine copy
Clone risk: Low- Look for the Mattel Games logo and the Blokus name on the box. Product code BJV44 is the classic set, and FMW25 is the smaller Fast Fun version.
- Count the pieces: 84 in all, 21 in each of four colours, plus a large square grid board.
- Check the label. The local copy should show Mattel Toys (India) details, and Hamleys lists its country of origin as India. Imported copies carry an importer's sticker instead.
- Generic 'blocks strategy' games for 2–4 players that turn up in Blokus searches are different products from other brands, even if they look similar.
- Check the price against Mattel India's ₹999. A full-size Blokus far below that from an unfamiliar brand is a warning sign, and a price above ₹6,000 means you are paying for an import.
On Amazon.in on 5 October 2026, every listing actually called Blokus was a Mattel product, so fakes using the name looked rare. The bigger risk was overpaying for an import, since Amazon.in's full-size Blokus listings cost more than six times Mattel India's ₹999.

Questions people ask about Blokus
Where can I buy Blokus in India?
Mattel's India-made Blokus (product code BJV44) is priced at ₹999 at Hamleys and Toycra, but both showed it as unavailable on 5 October 2026. Amazon.in had only imported Blokus listings at several times the Indian store price. Hamleys had the smaller Blokus Fast Fun in stock at ₹399.
Can 2 people play Blokus?
Yes. In Mattel's two-player rules, each person controls two colours and takes turns placing them, so the full board still fills up. Mattel also made Blokus Duo, a separate two-player version with a smaller board, but in India we found it only on marketplace listings that we could not check.
What is Blokus Fast Fun?
Blokus Fast Fun (Mattel code FMW25) is a smaller, cheaper version of the game in a compact box, with the same corners-only rule. Hamleys sold it for ₹399 on 5 October 2026. If you want the classic full-size set, look for product code BJV44.
What age is Blokus suitable for?
Mattel says 7 and up. Children need to remember only one rule (same colour touches only at the corners), and the planning gets deeper as they grow, so the same set works for children and adults.

Prototype notes for review (won't appear on the live site)
- Amazon match: search link, low confidence. Listing title seen: "Mattel Games Blokus Game-60 180 Months For Kids (B001P06GX4); Blokus (B07PYDK18P); Games Blokus Fast Fun (B077HZZW5D)".
- How it was found: COMPOSIO_SEARCH_AMAZON on amazon.in, 5 October 2026, queries 'Blokus', 'Mattel Blokus game', 'Mattel Games Blokus BJV44 strategy board game', 'Blokus classic board game 84 pieces' and 'blokus game original'. Every query returned the same Blokus listings: B001P06GX4 at ₹6,467 (MRP ₹8,999), rated 4.7 from about 10,200 ratings; B07PYDK18P at ₹6,614, rated 4.8 from 581; B077HZZW5D (Blokus Fast Fun) with no price shown, rated 3.9 from 171; and B0BFG8T6XV (World's Smallest Blokus) at ₹2,918. None was near Mattel India's ₹999 price, so the link goes to a search rather than a single listing.
- Made in India: Hamleys' product data gives the country of origin as 'India' and the trader as 'Mattel Toys (India) Private Limited' (type: Manufacturer). A box was not checked. Toycra's barcode for the same code (746775363840) is also Mattel's US UPC, so the barcode alone does not show where a copy was made.
- Stock at Hamleys: the page's structured data says 'InStock', but its size and stock data shows is_available false, quantity 0 and sellable false, so in_stock is recorded as false.
- No Amazon.in listing for the ₹999 India-made BJV44 was found. B001P06GX4 (R1983) is titled Blokus XL on Amazon.com and Blokus Classic on Amazon.de, and the version shipped on Amazon.in is unknown. B07PYDK18P's edition and seller are unknown. Amazon pages were not opened, per policy.
- Play time of 20–30 minutes comes from Wikipedia. Mattel's listing does not state a time.
- Blokus Fast Fun's board size and piece count were not confirmed. Hamleys' description repeats the classic text ('21 pieces' per colour), but the box is much smaller (about 17x24 cm).
- FirstCry's Blokus and Blokus Fast Fun pages say 'discontinued'. Crossword, Tabletop Universe and Bored Game Company had no Blokus listing, and Board Games India could not be read because of its bot check.
- The product image is Toycra's Shopify featured image. Text detection found the line 'Stake Your Claim, Protect Your Territory!' and a white background, which suggests a packshot, but it was not visually confirmed to be the box front.
- Flipkart listings for Blokus Duo, Trigon and To Go were seen only in web search results. Their sellers and prices were not checked.
