Catan or Ticket to Ride: which should you buy?
Both are the classic first step beyond Ludo and Monopoly, and both teach in about 10 to 15 minutes. They feel very different at the table, though, and in India the bigger difference right now is price and availability.

Catan is a social game. You need brick and your neighbour has three, so you start bargaining, and that back-and-forth is most of the fun. The dice add swings of luck: a run of bad rolls can leave you short for a while, which some families love and some find frustrating.
Ticket to Ride is calmer. On your turn you either draw train cards, claim one route, or take new destination tickets. There's no trading and no dice, so it suits players who prefer to think quietly, and its lower age and shorter play time make it easier with children and first-timers.
In India, Catan has a practical edge. Funskool makes an official edition here, so a genuine copy costs ₹2,800–3,500 and is easy to find. Ticket to Ride is only available as an import at roughly ₹4,750–6,200, and stock was patchy when we checked.
The short answer
Choose Catan if
- You'll usually have exactly 3 or 4 players
- Your family enjoys bargaining and a lively table
- You want a genuine copy under ₹3,500 that's in stock now
Choose Ticket to Ride if
- You sometimes play with 2 or 5 people
- You're playing with children (8+) or complete beginners
- You prefer a calmer game with less arguing, and don't mind paying more for an import
Only two of you? Ticket to Ride works with two; Catan doesn't. Or look at Jaipur, which is made for exactly two.
