Scrabble is the classic crossword-style word game for 2 to 4 players aged 10 and up. You draw letter tiles, build words on a shared board that link to the words already there, and score more by covering the bonus squares. It suits couples and families with older children who enjoy English words and a slow, thoughtful game. Genuine Scrabble in India is Mattel's. Most of the cheap 'Scrabble' sets on Amazon.in come from other brands.

Is Scrabble right for your table?

A good pick for

  • Two people who want a quiet, competitive game after dinner
  • Families with children of 10 and up who read a lot, since spelling and new words come up naturally
  • Getting grandparents, parents and teenagers around one board, because many older relatives already know the game
  • A gift for someone who loves words or crosswords

Skip it if

  • Some players are not comfortable in English and would feel left out
  • You want quick, noisy fun for a big group (Codenames or Taboo suits that better)
  • Your children are under 10. Scrabble Junior is made for them, but it was out of stock at Indian stores when checked

How Scrabble plays

The board is a 15 by 15 grid and the bag holds 100 letter tiles, including two blanks. Each player draws seven tiles onto a rack, keeping them hidden. Every tile shows a letter and its point value: common letters like E are worth 1 point, rare ones like Q and Z are worth 10.

The first word must cross the star in the centre of the board. After that, every new word has to join the words already on the board, crossword style, reading left to right or top to bottom. After your turn you draw back up to seven tiles.

Your score for a word is the total of its letter values, boosted by any coloured squares you covered: double or triple letter, double or triple word. A bonus square only counts on the turn it is first covered. Using all seven of your tiles in one turn earns an extra 50 points. Blanks can stand for any letter but score nothing.

If your letters are poor, you can give up your turn to swap some of them for new ones from the bag. Agree on a dictionary before you start. If someone challenges a word and it is not in the dictionary, the player takes the tiles back and scores nothing that turn.

The game ends when the bag is empty and one player has used all their tiles, or when nobody can move. Everyone subtracts the value of the tiles left on their rack, the player who went out adds those values to their own score, and the highest total wins.

Takes about 10 minutes to teach. Everything happens in English. You need to spell real English words, so a player with a smaller English vocabulary is at a clear disadvantage. No Hindi or other Indian-language edition was found at Indian stores. Mixed groups can agree to let weaker players check a dictionary before they play a word.

Buying Scrabble in India

Mattel sells Scrabble in India, and Indian stores list the standard game at ₹999-1,099. Hamleys gives China as the country of origin, and Toycra's barcode starts with 50, the GS1 prefix used for the UK, so the boxes on Indian shelves appear to be made abroad and imported by Mattel's Indian company. The Scrabble listings on Amazon.in were expensive imports of US or European editions at several times the store price. On 5 October 2026 both trusted-store listings were out of stock.

The standard set sold in India is Mattel's Scrabble Original: a board, 100 letter tiles, four racks, a tile bag and rules, for 2-4 players aged 10 and up. Toycra also lists Mattel's Junior Scrabble (₹899, out of stock when checked), which has a two-sided board: one side with pictures that guide younger children, the other for making their own words. Amazon.in also carries imported editions such as Hasbro's US version, the Deluxe Travel Edition and the Scrabble Slam card game, mostly priced between about ₹2,000 and ₹10,000.

How to make sure you get a genuine copy

Clone risk: High
  • Look for Mattel or Mattel Games on the box and in the listing's brand field, along with the Scrabble logo. Many Amazon.in listings put 'Scrabble' at the start of the title while the brand field shows an unrelated name.
  • Check the price. On 5 October 2026 genuine Mattel Scrabble was listed at ₹999 (Hamleys) and ₹1,099 (Toycra). Unbranded sets at ₹440-850 are not Mattel products, whatever the title says.
  • Watch for misspellings such as 'Scraable' or 'Scrable' and for titles stuffed with 'Original', 'Classic' and 'Educational' without any brand name.
  • Several different sellers use the same product photos. If the identical picture appears on many listings from different brands, treat it as a warning sign.
  • Check the contents: a genuine set has 100 letter tiles (two of them blank), four racks, a tile bag and a 15 by 15 board, and every tile shows its point value.

On 5 October 2026, Amazon.in searches for Scrabble returned dozens of non-Mattel listings using the Scrabble name, while no Mattel-branded classic set at an Indian price showed up in those results. Word games sold under their own names by Indian makers, such as Ekta's Spellex or Funskool's Word Plus, are legitimate products and not fakes. They are simply different games.

Questions people ask about Scrabble

Are the much cheaper Scrabble sets on Amazon.in genuine?

Most are not. Outside the US and Canada, Scrabble is made by Mattel, and on 5 October 2026 Indian stores listed Mattel's set at ₹999-1,099. Many cheaper listings use 'Scrabble' in the title but show a different brand, so check the brand field and the price before you buy.

What is the difference between Mattel and Hasbro Scrabble?

It is the same game. Hasbro holds the Scrabble rights in the US and Canada, and Mattel holds them in the rest of the world, including India. Imported Hasbro sets on Amazon.in cost several times more than the Mattel set at Indian stores.

Which dictionary should we use for Scrabble?

Outside North America, the official tournament word list is Collins Scrabble Words. For family games, any good English dictionary works, as long as everyone agrees on it before the first word goes down.

Is Scrabble suitable for children?

Mattel's Scrabble Original is rated for ages 10 and up. For younger children, Mattel makes Scrabble Junior (ages 6 and up at Toycra), whose picture side guides them to letters. It was out of stock at Toycra when checked.

Prototype notes for review (won't appear on the live site)
  • Amazon match: search link, low confidence. Listing title seen: "Mattel Scrabble Board Game, Word, Letters Game, Multi Color (title of the Amazon.in reviews page for the same product family; the B088KTJ3HP URL slug reads 'Mattel-Scrabble-Board-Multi-Color')".
  • How it was found: On 2026-10-05, COMPOSIO_SEARCH_AMAZON on amazon.in (queries 'Mattel Scrabble original board game', 'Mattel Scrabble' pages 1-3, 'Mattel Games Scrabble', 'Mattel Scrabble Original Brand Crossword Board Game', 'Mattel Scrabble 2 in 1 Scrabble Together', 'scrabble') did not show any Mattel-branded classic Scrabble at an Indian price. Results were dominated by non-Mattel 'Scrabble' listings at ₹440-1,399, plus import-priced genuine editions such as Hasbro's US Scrabble (B00IL5XY9K, ₹6,937, about 20,100 reviews) and Mattel Scrabble Junior (B00DE6G3XU, ₹6,588). B088KTJ3HP was found only through WebSearch 'site:amazon.in Mattel Scrabble Original board game', which also returned Amazon.in reviews page B0000AP4RQ titled 'Mattel Scrabble Board Game, Word, Letters Game, Multi Color' and combo listings such as B0B9GWDY3D (Mattel Scrabble plus UNO Cricket). Price, review count, seller and availability of B088KTJ3HP could not be checked, so the trusted stores below are the safer route. | 5 Oct 2026: no Mattel classic Scrabble at an Indian price found in Amazon.in search; switched to a search link until a genuine listing is confirmed.
  • Amazon.in ASIN B088KTJ3HP was not returned by COMPOSIO_SEARCH_AMAZON. Its title and Mattel branding come from WebSearch results only, and its price, seller and stock could not be checked. If the link is dead, Toycra or Hamleys are the fallbacks.
  • Both trusted-store listings were out of stock on 5 October 2026. Hamleys' structured data says 'InStock', but its item-level data shows quantity 0 and not sellable, so it is marked out of stock.
  • Country of origin is unclear. Hamleys lists China. A third-party Flipkart listing says India and names Mattel Toys (I) Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai as manufacturer/importer. made_in_india is set to false on the strength of the Hamleys data.
  • The model sold in India is unclear: Hamleys item code HFW31, Toycra SKU 51263 and barcode 5011363100011. How these relate to Mattel's international Scrabble Original (Y9592) was not confirmed.
  • Mattel's 2024 two-way board (HWD43, classic Scrabble plus the cooperative 'Scrabble Together') was not found at any Indian trusted store, so it is not recommended here.
  • Play time: 50-60 minutes is Wikipedia's figure for tournament (two-player) games. No publisher figure was found, and four-player home games are likely to take longer.
  • Toycra rate-limited the sandbox (HTTP 429). Toycra prices and stock come from its search API, read in the sandbox; barcodes and descriptions were read with WebFetch.
  • A Flipkart listing for Mattel Scrabble Original was seen at ₹977 (MRP ₹1,029) on 5 October 2026. Its seller was a third-party retailer, not Mattel or a named authorised distributor, so it is not in 'stores'.
  • No Scrabble board game was found at Crossword (it lists Scrabble books only), Tabletop Universe or FirstCry's Mattel board-games page. Bored Game Company, Board Games India and Gameistry could not be searched reliably.
