Ticket to Ride is a train-route game for 2 to 5 players aged 8 and up that takes 30 to 60 minutes. You collect coloured cards and use them to claim railway lines across a map of North America. It is one of the easiest modern board games to teach, so it suits mixed-age families, cousins at a get-together and people trying hobby games for the first time. Genuine copies are imported and were listed at ₹4,749–₹6,199 at Indian stores on 4 October 2026, though stock was patchy.

Is Ticket to Ride right for your table?

A good pick for

  • Mixed ages – children from about 8 can play alongside grandparents
  • Groups of up to 5, one more than Catan's base box allows
  • People new to board games beyond Ludo and Monopoly
  • A gift that looks good on the table and is easy to learn

Skip it if

  • Someone in your group gets upset when another player takes the route they needed – blocking is part of the game
  • You want deep strategy every week – this is light, and the card draw adds some luck
  • Your budget is tight – it is an import, costs more than Catan's Indian edition and is often out of stock

How Ticket to Ride plays

The board is a map of the USA and southern Canada. Cities are linked by coloured routes from 1 to 6 spaces long, and each player has 45 plastic trains in their colour.

At the start you get a few train cards and some destination tickets. These are secret goals such as connecting two particular cities, each worth points, and you must keep at least two of them.

On your turn you do one thing. You can draw two train cards (from five face-up cards or the deck), claim a route by playing a set of cards that matches its colour and length and placing your trains on it, or draw more destination tickets. Locomotive cards are wild, but taking a face-up locomotive uses your whole draw.

Longer routes score far more than short ones: a 1-train route is worth 1 point and a 6-train route 15. Another player can block you by taking a route you were counting on, and that is where the tension comes from. With 2 or 3 players, only one track of each double route can be used.

When someone is down to two or fewer trains, everyone gets one last turn. You then score your completed tickets and lose points for unfinished ones, and the longest continuous path earns a 10-point bonus. The highest total wins.

Takes about 10 minutes to teach. City names on the board and on the destination tickets are in English. The train cards have no text, so anyone who can find cities on a map can play.

Buying Ticket to Ride in India

No Ticket to Ride is made in India, so every genuine copy is imported. Funskool has imported the USA game (a FunCorp listing names Funskool India as importer, MRP ₹4,749), and specialist stores list it at ₹5,500–₹6,199. On 4 October 2026 most Indian listings were out of stock or 'on request', so you may have to wait or pay more. Many cheaper marketplace listings titled 'Ticket to Ride America' or similar come from brands unrelated to Days of Wonder.

The original USA-map game from 2004 was updated in 2025 as the '2025 Refresh'. The core rules and map are the same, but it has new art, larger train cards, clearer board fonts and 33 destination tickets. Either version is a fine buy. 'Ticket to Ride: India' is not a standalone game. It is Map Collection Volume 2: a double-sided board with India (designed by Ian Vincent, set in 1911) on one side and Switzerland on the other, plus its own tickets. You need the trains and cards from Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride Europe to play it. The India map is for 2–4 players and gives bonus points for linking a ticket's two cities by two separate routes. In India, Board Games India lists it only 'on request'.

How to make sure you get a genuine copy

Clone risk: High
  • The box should carry the Days of Wonder logo (newer boxes also show Asmodee). The official name is simply 'Ticket to Ride'; a 'Ticket to Ride America' sold under another brand is a red flag.
  • Compare the contents with the official list: 225 plastic trains in 5 colours, 110 train cards, destination tickets, a longest-path bonus card and 5 wooden scoring markers.
  • Reports of counterfeit copies describe thin boxes and boards, route colours on the board that don't match the cards, and a blank back on the board.
  • An imported box sold in India should have an MRP sticker with the importer's name and address.
  • Genuine copies were ₹4,749–₹6,199 at Indian stores on 4 October 2026, so a new copy far below ₹4,000 is unlikely to be genuine.

Unofficial Ticket to Ride copies are common on Indian marketplaces (Amazon.in and Flipkart), usually under unrelated seller brands with titles like 'Ticket to Ride America'. Genuine imports are often out of stock, so buying from a specialist store, or from a listing that clearly names Days of Wonder or Asmodee, is the safer route.

Questions people ask about Ticket to Ride

Is Ticket to Ride available in India?

Yes, but only as an import. Funskool has imported it (MRP ₹4,749 on a FunCorp listing), and specialist stores such as Board Games India, Boardway and Gameistry list it at ₹5,500–₹6,199. On 4 October 2026, most showed it as out of stock or available on request.

Is there a Ticket to Ride India map?

Yes. 'Ticket to Ride: India' is Map Collection Volume 2, with India (set in 1911) on one side of the board and Switzerland on the other. It is an expansion, so you need the base Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride Europe for the trains and cards. The India map plays 2–4.

Can 2 people play Ticket to Ride?

Yes, it plays 2 to 5. With 2 or 3 players, only one track of each double route can be used, so the map still feels crowded enough to block each other.

Should I buy the original or the 2025 Refresh?

Either is fine. The 2025 Refresh keeps the core rules and map but updates the art, uses larger train cards and has 33 destination tickets. Buy whichever genuine copy is in stock at a fair price.

Prototype notes for review (won't appear on the live site)
  • Amazon match: exact link, medium confidence. Listing title seen: "Asmodee | Ticket to Ride Refresh | Family Board Game | Age 8+ | 2-5 Players | 30-60 M…".
  • How it was found: Composio Amazon.in search 'Days of Wonder Ticket to Ride board game', 5 Oct 2026: B0F8PKN4B7, ₹5,499, 611 reviews
  • No confident Amazon.in listing for the genuine Days of Wonder USA game was found through search. B0D56THD69 ('Ticket to Ride USA Board Game') shows no brand in the result and was not used.
  • Board Games India's 2025 Refresh shows conflicting stock: the category page said In Stock, while the product page said out of stock / on request. The ₹5,500 price is shown excluding tax.
  • Boardway's Ticket to Ride page doesn't show stock status.
  • The exact change to the starting ticket draw in the 2025 Refresh: sources describe it differently, so how_it_plays says only 'keep at least two'.
  • Whether Funskool still imports Ticket to Ride: the game is not on Funskool's own website, and the FunCorp listing is out of stock. That listing also gives a minimum age of 13, while the box says 8+.
  • Whether any Indian store currently stocks Ticket to Ride: India. Board Games India lists it 'on request' at a placeholder price of ₹9,999, and no Amazon.in listing for it turned up in search.
  • Bored Game Company's Ticket to Ride product page couldn't be read; its Days of Wonder category showed only Europe and Legacy, both out of stock.
