Catan is a trading-and-building board game for 3 or 4 players aged 10 and up, and a game takes about 60 to 90 minutes. It suits families and groups of friends who enjoy bargaining and don't mind some dice luck, and who want something with more strategy than Ludo or Monopoly without heavy rules. Funskool has made an official edition in India since 2024, so a genuine copy costs roughly ₹2,800–₹3,500.

Is Catan right for your table?

A good pick for

  • Groups of 3 or 4 who enjoy talking, bargaining and making deals
  • Families ready to move on from Monopoly to a modern strategy game
  • Weekend game nights where a game of an hour or more is welcome
  • Buyers who want an official made-in-India edition at a fair price

Skip it if

  • You mostly play as a couple – the base box needs at least 3 players
  • Your group hates luck – a bad run of dice can leave you short of resources for a while
  • You want something that finishes in under 30 minutes

How Catan plays

The board is an island made of hexagon tiles: fields, forests, hills, pastures, mountains and one desert. Each tile gets a number token. You place your settlements on the corners where tiles meet, and those tiles become your income.

At the start of your turn you roll two dice. Every tile showing that number produces its resource – grain, lumber, brick, wool or ore – for anyone with a settlement or city touching it. So you collect cards on other people's turns too, which keeps everyone involved.

Then you trade and build. You can swap cards with other players (this is where most of the table talk happens) or trade with the bank at a worse rate. Resources are spent on roads, new settlements, upgrading settlements to cities, or development cards.

A roll of 7 produces nothing. Anyone holding more than 7 cards discards half, and the player who rolled moves the robber onto a tile, blocking it and stealing a card from someone next to it. It stops people from sitting on a big hand.

Settlements are worth 1 point and cities 2. There are bonus points for the longest road and the largest army (built from knight cards), and some development cards are hidden points. The first player to reach 10 points on their turn wins.

Takes about 15 minutes to teach. Resource cards are picture-only. Development cards and the rulebook are in English, but the text is short, so a table that mixes Hindi, English or any other language can play once one person has explained the rules.

Buying Catan in India

Catan is one of the few hobby board games with a genuine Indian edition. Funskool makes and distributes it under licence at an MRP of ₹3,499 (₹3,299 on Funskool's own site on 4 October 2026), and toy stores and online retailers stock it. Imported Catan Studio or Kosmos copies still turn up on Amazon.in, usually at higher prices and with longer delivery. For the base game there is little reason to pay extra for an import unless you specifically want the 6th-edition art.

The current worldwide edition is the 6th edition (April 2025). It has new art, a square box and a clearer rulebook, but the core rules are the same. The official Indian edition is Funskool's (product code 4935600), made under licence from Asmodee and announced in August 2024; launch coverage says it works with English-language Catan expansions. The expansions (Seafarers, Cities & Knights, Traders & Barbarians, Explorers & Pirates) and the 5–6 player extension are not made in India. Indian specialist stores list them as imports, and Board Games India showed all of them out of stock on 4 October 2026.

How to make sure you get a genuine copy

Clone risk: High
  • Check the box for the official CATAN logo plus either the Funskool logo with 'Made in India' or, on imports, Catan Studio / Kosmos / Asmodee branding.
  • The Funskool edition should show a BIS (ISI) mark and Funskool India Ltd's Chennai address; Toycra's listing quotes BIS number 6100094797.
  • Avoid listings with near-miss spellings (one Amazon.in result was titled 'CATAaN Board Game') or sold under toy brands unrelated to Catan.
  • A new base game priced well below about ₹2,500 is a warning sign; genuine copies were ₹2,799–₹3,499 at Indian stores on 4 October 2026.
  • Look closely at listing photos: blurry printing, thin tiles or no rulebook shown are red flags.

Unofficial Catan copies and add-ons appear regularly on Indian marketplaces, often under small seller brands or slightly misspelled names. Since Funskool's official edition now costs about ₹2,800–₹3,500, buying the Funskool box from a known retailer is the simplest way to avoid them.

Questions people ask about Catan

Is Catan available in India?

Yes. Funskool has made and sold an official licensed edition in India since 2024, with an MRP of ₹3,499 (Funskool's own site listed it at ₹3,299 on 4 October 2026). Indian toy stores and online retailers stock it, and imported editions also appear on Amazon.in.

Can 2 people play Catan?

Not with the base box alone: it is designed for 3 or 4. The Traders & Barbarians expansion includes an official two-player variant, and Rivals for Catan is a separate two-player game set in the same world. Both are imports in India.

Can 5 or 6 people play Catan?

Only with the 5–6 player extension, which adds extra tiles and pieces and is sold separately. In India it is an import, so check that it matches your base game's edition before you buy.

Is Funskool's Catan the real game?

Yes. catan.com lists Funskool as the official Catan partner for India, and Funskool makes the game under licence from Asmodee. The rules are the standard Catan rules.

  • Amazon match: exact link, medium confidence. Listing title seen: "Mayfair Games Catan 5th Edition".
  • How it was found: WebSearch 'Funskool Catan amazon.in' returned https://www.amazon.in/Funskool-Original-CATAN-Adventure-Playtime/dp/B00U26V4VQ; WebSearch 'amazon.in dp B00U26V4VQ Catan' returned https://www.amazon.in/Mayfair-Games-Catan-Pack-Multicolor/dp/B00U26V4VQ and https://amazon.com/dp/B00U26V4VQ (titled 'CATAN Board Game ... Made by CATAN Studio'). Other Amazon.in results such as Kosmos 682682 (B09KDVY64Y) and Kosmos 693602 (B00S5R2KVM) look like European imports and were not used.
  • Whether Amazon.in listing B00U26V4VQ currently ships the Funskool Indian edition or an imported Catan Studio 5th edition: search results show both 'Funskool' (URL slug) and 'Mayfair Games Catan 5th Edition' (title). Seller and price were not checked because Amazon pages were not fetched.
  • Which edition (5th or 6th) the Funskool print follows. One retailer (Maya Toys) calls it the 5th edition, but Funskool's own page doesn't say.
  • Whether 6th-edition expansions and the 6th-edition 5–6 player extension fit the Funskool base game.
  • Whether the Funskool pieces are wood or plastic (Toycra's listing says wooden settlements and cities).
  • Bored Game Company lists 'Catan – Funskool Edition' at ₹9,999 (out of stock). This looks like a placeholder price, so it was left out of stores and the price range.
  • Board Games India's 'Catan – Made in India by Funskool' page (₹3,499 in a search snippet) returned 404 today, so it is not listed.
  • Toyfort's listing describes an 'Indian-themed' board; Funskool doesn't say this anywhere, so it was not used.
  • Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart carry the Funskool edition (seen in search results only); their prices could not be read today.
