Monopoly is Hasbro's property-trading board game for 2 to 6 players aged 8 and up: you roll the dice, buy properties, collect rent and try to bankrupt everyone else. It suits families who want a familiar sit-down game for a long holiday afternoon and don't mind a lot of dice luck. In India, genuine Monopoly is sold by Hasbro India. The many 'Business' board games in Indian shops are separate games from other companies, not Monopoly.
Is Monopoly right for your table?
A good pick for
- Long summer-holiday afternoons when nobody is in a hurry
- Helping kids practise counting money, making change and weighing up deals
- Families who already know the idea from childhood games of Monopoly or Business
- Gifting, because most families recognise the name
Skip it if
- You want a game that reliably ends within an hour
- Your group dislikes elimination, because bankrupt players sit out until the game ends
- You prefer real decisions to dice luck (Catan is a better fit)
How Monopoly plays
Everyone starts with the same amount of money and a token on GO. On your turn you roll two dice and move around the board. Every time you pass GO, the bank pays you a salary.
If you land on a property nobody owns, you can buy it at the printed price. If you don't want it, the official rules say the bank auctions it and anyone can bid.
If you land on someone else's property, you pay them rent. If you own every property in one colour group, the rent on those properties doubles, and you can start building houses and then hotels, which push rent up sharply. Houses must be built evenly across the group.
Chance and Community Chest cards, tax squares and jail add twists. You can get out of jail by rolling doubles, using a 'Get Out of Jail Free' card or paying a fine. If you can't pay what you owe, you can mortgage properties. If that still isn't enough, you are bankrupt and out of the game.
The last player left in the game wins. The popular 'Free Parking jackpot' is a house rule, not part of the official rules. If time is short, agree on a finishing time before you start and count up who is richest when it arrives, as long as everyone accepts the change at the start.
Takes about 10-15 minutes to teach. Title deeds and the Chance and Community Chest cards have English text that players read aloud during the game. Hasbro India also sells Monopoly in Telugu and Tamil, so check the box language before buying.
Buying Monopoly in India
Monopoly is sold locally by Hasbro India, and several editions are made in India. Toycra's E8272 listing gives India as the country of origin and Hasbro India's Mumbai address. On 4 October 2026 the standard game cost about ₹1,085-1,300 at Indian stores. Some Amazon.in listings use the same ASIN as US listings (for example the 2025 storage-tray version), so check the seller and delivery estimate if you want a locally stocked copy.
Most buyers want Hasbro's standard Monopoly (2-6 players, ages 8+). In 2025 Hasbro refreshed the classic box (item G0009) with a storage tray and larger metal tokens. The Indian-made E8272 box lists 6 tokens. Hasbro India also sells a Monopoly India Edition with Indian cities and rupees (made by Funskool for Hasbro India), Telugu and Tamil editions (Telugu launched December 2022), Monopoly: Cricket Edition (launched in India in October 2023 at ₹999, made in India) and an App Banking Edition (launched November 2025). FirstCry also lists the Go to Jail, Buy Everything and Free Parking Jackpot expansions and the card game Monopoly Deal.
How to make sure you get a genuine copy
Clone risk: Medium- The box and listing should say Hasbro or Hasbro Gaming and carry the Monopoly logo. Indian boxes name Hasbro India Toys Pvt. Ltd. (Mumbai) as marketer or importer. Some also name Funskool (India) Ltd. as manufacturer, and that is genuine.
- Check the price. The standard game cost about ₹1,085-1,300 at Indian stores on 4 October 2026. A 'Monopoly' for ₹300-500 is almost certainly a different game or an unofficial copy.
- Read the listing title and brand field closely. Some sellers put 'Monopoly', or misspellings like 'Monopolys', into the titles of other brands' games. The brand should be Hasbro or Monopoly, not another company.
- Check the contents against Hasbro's list: 28 Title Deed cards, 16 Chance cards, 16 Community Chest cards, 32 houses, 12 hotels, 2 dice and a money pack.
- Games called 'Business', 'Business India' or 'International Business' from makers like Ekta or Frank are different products sold under their own names. They are not Monopoly, but they are not fakes either.
Besides genuine Hasbro editions, Indian shops widely sell 'Business'-style property games from Indian companies such as Ekta (Business India, ₹252 on Flipkart against an MRP of ₹399) and Frank (₹396). These are legitimate games under their own brand names, with similar roll-and-buy play on Indian cities, but they have their own boards, money and rules and are not Hasbro's Monopoly. A few listings for these and other games use the word 'Monopoly' only as a search keyword, so read the brand name before buying.

Questions people ask about Monopoly
Is Monopoly the same as the 'Business' game sold in India?
No. Monopoly is made by Hasbro. 'Business', 'Business India' and 'International Business' are separate games from Indian companies such as Ekta and Frank. They share the basic idea of rolling dice, buying cities and collecting rent, but they have their own boards, money and rules. They are perfectly legitimate games, just not Monopoly.
Is there an Indian edition of Monopoly?
Yes. Hasbro India sells a Monopoly India Edition with Indian cities and rupees, plus Monopoly: Cricket Edition and Telugu and Tamil versions of the classic game. Some of these are manufactured in India.
Is a Funskool Monopoly genuine?
Yes. Funskool was set up in 1987 as a joint venture between Hasbro and MRF and published licensed Monopoly editions in India for years. Hasbro left the venture in 2014 and now sells Monopoly in India under its own name. Some current Hasbro boxes still name Funskool as the manufacturer.
How long does a game of Monopoly take?
Often well over an hour. Wikipedia gives a range of 1 to 6 hours. Playing by the official rules, including auctioning properties nobody buys, keeps money moving. If you need a fixed end, agree on a finishing time before you start.
